About

Welcome to The Vertigo Effect. A blog for filmmakers that delivers valuable tips and techniques on the art and business of filmmaking.

Hi, my name is Jessel Monteverde and I’m a full-time director and amateur blogger. Most of my work the last couple of years has been in TV commercials. I also direct the occasional music video and live event. As with most directors, I’m working on my screenplay. Actually, I’ve been too busy with this blog to write my script. Maybe this blog is just another form of procrastination. LOL!!!!!

From Dreams to Reality

Like many aspiring directors, I started out as an intern for a production company (specifically, Richard Donner’s company). During this time I was also studying film at UCLA. When I left school, I directed a short film which helped me break into the music video industry here in the Philippines. (Yes, there are plenty of directing opportunities outside the U.S.) After a couple of years of doing videos, I broke into the advertising industry. All those years of starvation have finally paid off. :)

Why The Vertigo Effect?

I started The Vertigo Effect to help filmmakers and film enthusiasts learn not just the art but also the business of filmmaking and directing. As a director, you never stop learning and this site was put up as a venue for me to share what I’m learning.

But why “The Vertigo Effect”?

The name actually came to me after a few colleagues asked me about the interesting camera move they saw in the movie Jaws or Vertigo. The camera move is also known as a Dolly Zoom wherein the camera simultaneously zooms in/out and dollies out/in. What we see is a perspective change while the main subject remains the same size on screen. The technique can be used to heighten suspense and more recently for comedic effect.
